This is what I’m often talking about in class about being a protector, being the person running toward danger instead of just being a spectator or even running away. Martial Arts don’t make you invincible, of course, but they can give you an advantage by increasing your strength, your speed, your awareness, and your reflexes. Most people don’t join Martial Arts classes to become a protector. For some, it’s about weight loss. For others, it’s about stress relief. But almost everyone that joins eventually answers to that higher calling. Martial Artists often find that calling in their study and understanding of warriorship, sometimes through daily recitation of a code of honor which usually includes protection of the weak or the elderly.
